Armin van Buuren: ‘EDM uprising is reminiscent of The Beatles’

“We cannot turn our heads from the fact that it [EDM] is moving a generation of people and it is a cultural phenomenon like what happened with The Beatles,” said van Buuren.

In an interview with Digital Spy, legendary DJ Armin van Buuren reveals his view on the emerging popularity of electronic dance music (EDM).

“What happened with The Beatles in the ’60s is happening again with electronic music,” said van Buuren.

EDM is not simply a temporary sensation.  Instead, the movement brought on by EDM is defining the music of this generation, just as The Beatles defined the 60’s.

The only difference, van Buuren said, is that EDM “doesn’t have a face as much as it did with The Beatles.”

Most people can name the faces that dominated the music of the 60’s (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr).  EDM, however, has a countless number of artists who shape this new genre.

Some of the most well-known EDM artists include:

Van Buuren also believes that EDM has a positive, powerful impact on listeners.

In his newly released track, titled “Save My Night,” van Buuren expresses the power EDM has on fans in just three lines:

“The music saves my soul”

“The beat saves my life”

“Tonight this DJ saves my night”

To van Buuren, EDM is not a movement based on it’s newfound popularity.  Rather, it is about producing music that feels right to both the artist and the audience.

“Follow your heart, not the chart,” said van Buuren.
